Rod Crompton is a visiting adjunct professor at the African Energy Leadership Centre, Wits Business School and a researcher at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies. He joined Wits in 2017 to set up the African Energy Leadership Centre after a long career in service of the public, including as a full-time regulator at the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) and as a deputy director general in the then Department of Minerals and Energy. He has also done consulting work for regulators and governments in West Africa, Namibia and South Africa. He has served on the boards of several state-owned companies and is currently a non-executive director of Eskom, Africa’s largest electricity utility. In 2017 he was awarded honorary life membership of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA). He obtained his PhD from the (then) University of Natal (Durban) in 1994.
