The Kigali Convention Centre is a conference venue facility located in Kigali, Rwanda. The facility has four main components: a 5-star hotel (Radisson Blu Hotel Kigali) with 292 rooms on six floors; a 2,600 seating capacity conference centre; an I.T. office park with a net floor area of 32,200 square metres (the Kigali Information Technology Park); and a museum on the bottom floor of the I.T. park. The owner-developer of the facility is a Rwandan company called Ultimate Concepts Limited with multiple stakeholders including the Government through Prime Holdings, Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) and Rwanda Investment Group (RIG).
The facility was designed by German Architects, Spatial Solutions. The architectural design is based on traditional Rwandan culture. The dome shaped auditorium structure represents the shape of the former kings’ traditional royal residences. The hotel attached to the convention centre has a multi-colored exterior façade resembling a traditional Rwandan weaved basket.
The contract for construction of the facility was initially awarded to Chinese construction firm Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG) in 2009, and the centre was expected to be complete by 2012. Following protracted delays on the project, the contract was re-awarded in 2015 to Turkish construction firm Summa, to complete the project. Construction of the facility was completed in 2016, and the Kigali Convention Centre hosted the 27th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) which was held in Rwanda from 10 to 18 July, 2016. The project is estimated to have cost US$300 million.
