African Union (AU) Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The African Union (AU) is a continental organisation consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent. The administrative headquarters building of the AU, comprising a Conference Center and Office Complex is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The headquarters facility hosts the biannual AU summits, and also serves as a conference center for African and diaspora businesses.
The facility includes a 21-storey office building, housing the administrative departments of the African Union Commission; a 2,505 person capacity plenary chamber; and a sub-conference building with 32 conference rooms. The headquarters facility was designed by China's Tongji Architectural Design (Group). The building was designed to be an icon of the African Union’s progression, symbolizing the stabilization, rejuvenation, and peace of the united continent. The Grand Conference Hall’s ellipsoidal volume was placed in the center of the complex as a prominent feature, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and communication.
The Main Contractor for the project was China State Construction Engineering Corporation. Construction work commenced on the project in 2008 and was completed in 2011. The facility is estimated to have cost US$200 million. It was inaugurated on 28 January 2012.
